This guide is for buyers and maintenance teams who order casters with a brake. Brake names can be confusing, and a wrong brake means a trolley that rolls when it should not. Here we explain the names our catalogue uses and what to send us so the quote is right the first time.
Why the brake choice matters
A brake keeps a loaded trolley from moving while you load, unload or work next to it. A brake on at least two casters is common practice for this. Check your equipment maker's instructions and your site safety officer for the rule on your site.
A caster without a brake is often the right choice too. Rigid casters, for example, are listed with no lock. The point is to choose on purpose, not by guess.
The brake names in our catalogue
The HOD code legend in our catalogue names eight brake types. We give them here exactly as printed:
- Non Lock Brake (Rigid)
- Side Lock Brake (Metal)
- Wheel Lock Brake (Metal)
- Total Lock Brake (Metal)
- Total Lock Brake (Plastic)
- Wheel Lock Brake (Plastic)
- Separate total Lock Brake(Metal)
- Separate total Lock Brake(Plastic)
Not every series offers every type. Each series page shows the brake type for each model, or shows plain Yes or No where the catalogue does not give a type. On our site you can also filter models as "With brake" or "Without brake".
We do not describe how each lock works beyond these names. If you need to know how a type acts on the wheel or the swivel, ask us, and we will confirm from the product documents.
Brakes in the heavy duty series
Our catalogue lists the HOD 72 and 73 heavy duty series with double bearing wheels and load ratings from 120 to 505 kg. Each wheel option is listed as a swivel top plate caster, a swivel top plate caster with brake and a rigid top plate caster.
In the model tables, the braked casters carry Side Lock Brake (Metal) or Total Lock Brake (Metal). The rigid casters show Non Lock Brake (Rigid). Tell us which one you want, or send a photo of the brake on your old caster.
Brakes in the medium / heavy duty series
The HOD 62 series is listed with double bearing wheels and load ratings from 80 to 330 kg. It is listed as swivel and rigid top plate casters, swivel threaded stem casters and swivel bolt hole casters, with brake options.
Here the braked models also show Side Lock Brake (Metal) or Total Lock Brake (Metal). The brake type is listed for the top plate, threaded stem and bolt hole versions.
How to choose a brake
Work from how you use the trolley. The points below are the facts we ask for when a buyer sends us an enquiry for braked casters.
- Where it parks. Note whether it stands on a flat floor or a slope. If the trolley parks on a slope, say so in your enquiry.
- Who operates it. Tell us whether staff can reach the brake easily.
- What it carries. Tell us what the trolley carries and how many casters you want braked.
- Which casters get brakes. Tell us how many of the casters need a brake and which ones.
Send a photo of the brake on your old caster if you have one. It shows us the type faster than a description. You can also check brake options by model in our caster finder.
What to send us for a quote
- What the trolley or equipment is, and what it carries.
- The full loaded weight and the number of casters.
- The brake type you want, using the catalogue name if you know it, or "no brake".
- How many casters need a brake, and whether they are swivel or rigid.
- The mounting: top plate, threaded stem, bolt hole or other fitting.
- Whether the floor is flat or sloped, and whether it is wet.
- A photo or the model code of your old casters.
Request a quote on our website or message us on WhatsApp, and we will confirm the right series and brake for your trolley.
