HOD Medium Duty Caster Series

This guide is for buyers and maintenance teams who see "single bearing" and "double bearing" on a caster and have to pick one. It shows how our catalogue uses these names, so you can compare like with like. It also says what the catalogue does not tell you, so you can ask us the right questions.

The bearing names in our catalogue

The bearing is part of the product name in our HOD catalogue, next to the wheel. The names are not the same in every series. These are the main names you will meet:

  • Single bearing and double bearing. Both appear in the medium duty series. The light duty series lists a single bearing group too.
  • Double bearing. Several series use this name, including heavy duty, medium / heavy duty, foam, pneumatic and shock absorbing.
  • Delrin bearing. The light duty series lists two groups with it.
  • Dual bearing. The medium / light duty series uses this wording.
  • Other names. Four ball bearing, annular bearing and bushing construction each appear in one series.

We use the catalogue wording and do not expand it here. If a name is new to you, ask us what it means for your job.

Single and double bearing in the medium duty series

The medium duty series is where you can compare the two side by side. The catalogue lists series 51 as single ball bearing and series 52 as double ball bearing.

The load ratings differ: 30 to 160 kg for single bearing and 35 to 170 kg for double bearing. Both come as swivel and rigid top plate casters, swivel threaded stem casters and swivel bolt hole casters, with brake options.

Read those two ranges as listed. The catalogue gives a rating for each, but it does not say how long either bearing lasts or how easily it rolls. So use the numbers on the page for the comparison.

Delrin and single bearing in the light duty series

The light duty series is listed at 8 to 65 kg in three groups. Two groups have a Delrin bearing and one has a single bearing:

  • PU wheels with Delrin bearing, 12 to 65 kg.
  • TPR wheels with Delrin bearing, 8 to 40 kg.
  • TPR wheels with single bearing, 10 to 50 kg.

The two Delrin groups come with brake versions. The single bearing group is listed as swivel top plate, swivel threaded stem and rigid top plate casters, with no brake model. If you need a brake, say so at the start.

Double ball bearing in the heavy duty series

The heavy duty series is the HOD 72 and 73 range, and the catalogue calls both double ball bearing series. It is listed at 120 to 505 kg per caster, with thirteen wheel options.

The load rating depends on the wheel option, so a bearing name alone will not give you the number. Look up the exact wheel in the series page, or send us the code you have.

Compare options before you order

A bearing name is one line in the specification. These checks help you compare two casters fairly:

  • Compare casters from the same series and the same wheel material first, so fewer things change at once.
  • Compare the load rating of the exact option, not of the whole series.
  • Compare the mounting and the brake option. A single bearing option and a double bearing option may not offer the same fittings.
  • Write down how the trolley is used: pushed by hand or towed, how often, and over what floor.

Our caster finder lets you set the mounting, wheel material, brake and load, and shows the options that remain.

If you replace casters, keep one old caster. Its bearing type and code help us match it, and a photo of the wheel and bracket saves a round of questions.

What to send us for a quote

  • What the trolley or equipment is, and what it carries.
  • The total loaded weight and the number of casters.
  • The old caster code, or a photo of the old caster and its bracket.
  • Single bearing or double bearing, if your current caster has one.
  • The mounting: top plate, threaded stem or bolt hole.
  • Rigid, swivel or brake, and how many of each.
  • The floor and how the trolley is moved.
  • The quantity you need.
