This guide is for maintenance managers, facility teams and workshop owners who want rubber on steps, ramps or metal surfaces. You may be fixing a slippery step or covering a worn walkway. Here is what our catalogue says and what to tell us, so we can confirm the right product.

Sheet or coating: our catalogue lists both

Rubber on a step can mean two different things. It can be a sheet fixed on top of the surface. Or it can be a coating applied to the surface itself.

Our catalogue words are short, so we repeat them as they are. Rubber sheets are listed for flooring, lining, sealing and protection. Rubber coating is listed for rollers, metal parts, lining, insulation and anti-slip applications.

The catalogue mentions anti-slip only under rubber coating. It does not say that a rubber sheet is anti-slip. So if grip is the reason for your enquiry, say so in your first message. Then we can check what we can offer.

The two routes need different details from you. For a sheet, we need sizes, quantity and how you plan to fix it. For a coating, we need to know the part, the metal and its condition. If you are not sure which route you want, tell us the problem and we will help you decide.

Rubber sheets in our catalogue

Our catalogue lists rubber sheets in several materials: EPDM, nitrile, Viton, NR / SBR and neoprene. For mats and pads, the catalogue lists NR / SBR sheet. It describes this sheet as general-purpose natural and synthetic rubber, for mats, pads, lining and protection.

The general rubber sheet listing covers flooring, lining, sealing and protection.

The catalogue gives no slip rating for any sheet. If you need one, tell us. We will say what the catalogue shows and what we can confirm. For any papers your safety team needs, ask us for the product documents.

Rubber coating in our catalogue

Rubber coating is listed under coating services, for metal parts and for anti-slip applications. If your step or ramp is steel and you want rubber on the metal itself, tell us. We will confirm what we can quote.

Our catalogue also lists PU coating for wear protection, grip, impact resistance and surface durability. If grip is your problem, tell us and we will confirm whether to quote rubber or PU coating.

Describe the surface and the conditions

Start with the surface itself.

  • Material: steel, aluminium, concrete, tile or another surface.
  • Condition: new, worn, rusted, painted or oily.
  • Size: length and width of each step or ramp, and how many there are.
  • Shape: flat, ridged, chequered plate or curved.
  • Edges: whether the step has a nosing, a lip or an open edge.

Measure each step, because steps in one building are not always the same. Write every size with its unit.

Then tell us where the steps are and what happens on them.

  • Inside or outside, and whether there is shade or direct sun.
  • Whether the surface gets wet, oily or dusty.
  • Whether people, trolleys or equipment use it.
  • How often it is used, and whether it is cleaned with water or chemicals.

If oil is present, tell us what kind. Our catalogue lists nitrile sheet as oil-resistant, and it lists EPDM sheet as weather-resistant. Neither listing says anything about grip. So we need the full picture before we confirm a material.

Safety requirements and flooring

We do not give slip ratings or safety advice in this guide. Follow your site safety officer on what a walkway or ramp must meet. Tell us any requirement you have, and we will say what we can confirm.

Floors in workshops and stores are a different job from steps. Our guide on rubber sheets for industrial flooring and lining covers them. Read it if your question is about a large floor area rather than a few steps.

What to send us for a quote

  • Photos of the steps, ramps or metal surfaces, from the front and from the side.
  • The surface material and its condition.
  • The size of each step or ramp, and the quantity.
  • Whether you want a sheet, a coating or our advice on which.
  • Where it is used, and whether it is wet, oily, hot or outdoors.
  • How you plan to fix the rubber, if you have a plan.
  • Any requirement from your safety officer.
