Why tube mill saw blades wear out early

Checks to run when flying cut-off blades on a tube mill lose life too fast: material, blade version, process and what to tell us, from KINS' ORANGE ratings.

Kinkelder KINS’ ORANGE

This guide is for tube mill managers and maintenance teams whose flying cut-off blades lose life too fast. It lists the checks to run before you order the next blade. An early blade change means a stop and lost output.

Start with what the mill cuts

Write down the tube material before you look at any blade. Include the grade, and whether the mill runs more than one material in a week. A blade picked for one material is easy to leave on the machine when the material changes.

Our KINS' ORANGE range is the TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) line for flying cut-off on tube mills. Its versions carry different material scores. For example, OrbitalMaster Stainless is rated 10 for Stainless Steel and 4 for Carbon Steel, and SpeedMaster is rated the other way round. Our guide to the six ORANGE versions and their ratings lists every version. Read the two material scores together to see which material each version is rated for.

What the Blade Life and Scarf rows show

Blade Life is rated 10 on five of the six versions. OrbitalMaster Stainless is rated 8. Use the row to compare blades on the same page. The catalogue gives no number of cuts or hours, so do not expect a figure from it.

The Scarf row runs from 6 on OrbitalMaster Stainless to 10 on both ScarfMaster versions. The catalogue does not explain what the row measures. Ask us what it means for your mill before you use it to choose.

If your blade life dropped after a change, tell us the change. A new tube grade, a new tube batch or a new machine setting is worth a note, even if it looks small.

Check the process and the line

KINS' ORANGE is the flying cut-off line. If your plant also cuts tube to length on a stationary or semi-automatic saw, our catalogue lists a separate line for that, KINS' BLUE. Tell us before you move a blade from one line to the other process.

Look at the code on the blade in the machine and the code on your last order. On a mill that runs more than one version, the wrong one can end up on the shaft.

Causes outside the blade

Some causes of early wear sit outside the blade. The machine, the blade fitting, the speed, the feed and the cooling all play a part. We do not quote a speed or feed from a catalogue page. Ask the machine maker for these, and tell us what you run.

Our catalogue pages do not give a cutting speed for any KINS' ORANGE blade, and we do not quote one.

Check that the blade is the size and fitting your machine takes. Check the bore and the fixing holes against the old blade. Then tell us anything you changed on the mill in the last few weeks.

Record what you see

Take photos of the worn blade and a few cut pieces, with a ruler or a coin for scale. Note how long the blade ran before you changed it, in cuts or hours, and how it compared with the one before.

Say what you see in plain words: short life, rough cuts or burrs. We will not guess a cause from one line of text. A photo and a few facts let us confirm which version to look at.

You can compare all versions on our KINS' ORANGE page, or see every line on the saw blade page.

What to send us for a quote

  • The machine make and model, and the blade size it takes.
  • The old blade's code, or its diameter, bore, thickness and fixing holes.
  • The tube material and grade, and whether you also run stainless steel.
  • The tube shape and size. Give the range if it changes.
  • How long the current blade runs, and what is wrong: short life, rough cuts or burrs.
  • Any change on the mill before the problem started.
  • Photos of the worn blade and a cut piece.
  • The quantity you need.

Request a quote on our website or message us on WhatsApp, and we will confirm the right blade for your line.
