Saw blades

Signs a saw blade needs replacing

How to read the teeth, the cut ends, the noise and the heat marks on a used saw blade, and what to send us from a Kinkelder blade when you order a new one.

This guide is for workshop supervisors and maintenance teams who need to judge when a saw blade is finished. It gives four places to look, and each one points to a guide that goes deeper into that symptom. For stopping the saw or handling the blade, follow the machine maker and your site rules.

Look at the teeth

Look at the teeth and the tips. Chipped, broken or missing teeth are a sign that the blade needs attention. Tell us which teeth and where on the blade.

The causes are many: the steel grade, the clamping, the blade line. Our guide on why saw blade teeth chip or break covers them.

If you run KINS' YELLOW, the catalogue says a damaged segment can be replaced on its own. Tell us what you see before you order.

Look at the cut ends

Look at the cut ends as well as the teeth. Compare a recent cut with a good one you kept.

  • Rough ends.
  • Burrs on the inside or outside of tube.
  • Cuts that no longer sit square.

Rough ends and burrs are covered in burrs and rough ends: a saw blade check. Keep a good cut end for comparison and send us a photo of both.

Listen and watch the machine

A saw that sounds different, shakes more or works harder than before is telling you something. The cause may be the blade, the clamping or the machine. Tell your maintenance team, and tell us.

Note whether the change came on slowly or all at once, and tell us. Write down when the change started. A note such as "after the steel changed" helps us more than "it is worse".

Look for heat marks

Blue or brown colour on the teeth or the body is a sign of heat. Heat marks on the cut end are another. Colour shows heat, not the cause. See saw blade overheating and discoloured teeth.

Blade or something else

A worn blade is one answer. Others are a new steel grade, a different tube wall, or a loose part on the machine. Before you reorder, check what changed.

Tell us:

  • Whether the material or its source changed.
  • Whether the machine, the clamps or the cooling changed.
  • Whether the blade is the same line and version as before.

If you want to try another version, tell us before you change. Blades in the same line carry different ratings for the same steel. For help on reading the ratings, see how to read Kinkelder blade ratings. If you cut flying cut-off on a tube mill, see why tube mill saw blades wear out early.

Our catalogue lists these lines: KINS' BLUE, KINS' RED and KINS' ORANGE. See our saw blade range for all of them.

A short record turns a guess into a pattern. Each time you fit a blade, write down a few facts and keep them near the saw.

  • The date the blade went on.
  • The material and the tube wall or bar size you cut with it.
  • Any change in the cut ends, the sound or the heat marks, with the date you noticed it.

Keep the old blade after it comes off the machine, in a dry place where its markings stay readable. Photograph it from the same angle each time. Two photos taken weeks apart show change better than any description. When you contact us, send the record with the photos.

Do not wait for every sign to appear before you ask us. A single sign, such as chipped teeth, is enough reason to send photos and ask.

What to send us for a quote

  • Photos of the worn blade: both faces, the teeth and the edge.
  • A photo of a good cut end and a bad one.
  • The old blade code, or its diameter, bore, thickness and fixing holes.
  • The machine make and model, and whether it is stationary, semi-automatic or a tube mill.
  • What you cut, its size and wall thickness, and the steel grade.
  • When the change started, and what else changed around then.
  • The quantity you need.
