This guide is for buyers who see "light duty", "medium duty" and "heavy duty" on a quote. They want to know what the names stand for. In our catalogue they are series names, and each series page lists its own wheels, bearings, brakes and fittings.
What a duty name is
A duty name is a label for a series, a family of casters in the HOD catalogue. It is not a grade. Each series page lists a load range per caster. Tell us your load per caster and we will confirm the series. A series page also lists its models, so you can read the exact wheel and fitting before you write to us.
The ranges overlap, so the name alone does not tell you what to order. For the figures, see which HOD caster series fits your load. For the sums, see caster load capacity.
Light and medium duty series
Our light duty series has three groups. Two have PU or TPR wheels with Delrin bearing, and one has TPR wheels with single bearing. The catalogue lists swivel and rigid top plate casters and swivel threaded stem casters. Brake versions are listed for the two Delrin groups. The single bearing group has no brake model. It does not list a bolt hole version.
The medium / light duty series is the HOD 42 range. It has dual bearing wheels in nylon, PU and TPR, with and without brake. It lists top plate, threaded stem and other swivel fittings.
The medium duty series is the HOD 51 and 52 range. Series 51 is listed as single ball bearing and series 52 as double ball bearing. Both list top plate, threaded stem and bolt hole fittings, with brake options.
Medium / heavy and heavy duty
The medium / heavy duty series is the HOD 62 range. It has seven wheel options, all with double bearing. Each lists top plate, threaded stem and bolt hole fittings, with brake options.
The heavy duty series is the HOD 72 and 73 range, with double bearing wheels in YUPA, PU, Iron Core PU, PA, ER and TPR. Its models are swivel top plate, swivel top plate with brake and rigid top plate. The catalogue does not list a bolt hole version for it.
Our catalogue also lists an extra heavy duty series and low gravity series. Each has its own page. Tell us the load and the machine, and we will confirm which page to read.
How to use the names
A duty name says nothing about your floor, your cleaning or your site. Wet floors, chemicals and heat affect which wheel material and bracket you need. Tell us about your site.
If your old caster says "medium duty", send us its code and a photo. We will read the code against our catalogue.
Use the name to find the right page. Then read that page for the wheel, the bearing, the fitting and the brake it lists, because those change from one series to the next. Then compare on the points that change between series:
- the listed load for the exact wheel option;
- the wheel material and the bearing name;
- the fitting: top plate, threaded stem, bolt hole or another fitting;
- whether the model comes with a brake.
If your load sits where two series overlap, ask us to quote both. Tell us and we will confirm which series to quote. Our caster finder filters by all of these points. If a wheel material code is new to you, our caster terms explained for buyers gives each word in plain English.
