Casters for trolley builders and fabricators

For workshops that build trolleys: how to write one caster specification for many units, plan the fitting before the frame, and what to send us for a quote.

A welder in a mask holds a welding torch in a metal workshop beside steel frames

This guide is for workshops and fabricators that build trolleys, carts and racks and fit the same casters to many units. You choose the caster once and then repeat it. Here is how to write that choice down so it holds for every unit, and what to tell us.

Write one specification per trolley model

Treat the caster as part of the drawing, like a bolt or a tube size. Write one line for each trolley model and use it every time you build that model.

The line should hold:

  • the series and the full model code;
  • the wheel material, as named in our catalogue;
  • the fitting: top plate, threaded stem, bolt hole or another fitting;
  • how many casters are swivel, how many are rigid, and which carry a brake;
  • the load per caster you designed for.

Keep the line short enough that a welder or a buyer can read it at a glance. Wet floors and cleaning chemicals affect which wheel material and bracket you need, so note the floor in the drawing too.

If you keep the full model code in the drawing, a later order names exactly the same part. Do not shorten the code or read meaning into its digits.

Choose the fitting before you finish the frame

The fitting decides how the frame is drilled or built. A top plate needs a flat mounting face and a hole layout that matches the plate. A threaded stem needs a way to hold it in the frame. A bolt hole needs a bolt and a place to fix it.

So pick the caster first, or at least the fitting, and then cut and drill. Tell us the hole layout you plan, and we will check it against the models. Our guide to top plate, threaded stem and bolt hole casters names each fitting. You can also filter models by fitting in our caster finder.

Our medium / heavy duty series, the HOD 62 range, lists all three fittings with brake options, across seven wheel options.

Plan the swivel and rigid mix, and the load

Many trolleys use a mix of swivel and rigid casters, and the mix is part of your design. Decide it once per model and write it down. Our guide to swivel and rigid casters covers the common layouts.

In our catalogue the brake versions are swivel casters, and rigid casters are listed without a lock. So if your design needs a brake in a rigid position, tell us early.

Then work from the load per caster. Take the heaviest load your customer will put on the finished trolley, add the weight of the trolley, and divide by the number of casters. Do this for the largest version of each trolley you build. Our caster load capacity guide shows the steps and what to leave as margin.

Fit casters to one trolley first. Check it against your site rules and the trolley maker's instructions, and note anything you would change. If you change the fitting or the series after this check, update the specification line. Then every later unit follows the same line.

Listed trolleys as another route

Our catalogue also lists universal trolleys and platform trolleys. The universal trolleys are listed at 150 to 200 kg in seven models, and the platform trolleys at 380 to 400 kg in three models. Tell us what your customer must carry, and we will confirm whether to quote a listed model.

What to send us for a quote

  • What the trolley is, and what it will carry at the heaviest.
  • The caster specification line for each trolley model.
  • How many trolleys you build, and how many casters each needs. If a model repeats, send the same code and the same line each time.
  • The fitting and the hole layout you plan.
  • Rigid, swivel or brake, and which positions.
  • The floor the finished trolley will run on, and anything on it.
  • The model code, if you already use a caster.

Request a quote on our website or message us on WhatsApp, and we will confirm the right series and codes for your trolleys.
